LEONARDO DA VINCI (VINCI 1452-AMBOISE 1519)

Job's tears (Coix lachryma-jobi)

c.1510

RCIN 912429

Leonardo’s studies of plants are among the first modern botanical drawings ever made. Job’s Tears is a cereal which had been newly introduced to Europe from East Asia. Leonardo captures more than the merely decorative aspects of the plant, and shows an interest in the forces that move and support it, causing its stems laden with seeds to arc.
