MARK CATESBY (1682-1749)

Prickly Apple with Zebra Swallowtail Butterfly

c.1722-6

RCIN 926064

The naturalist Mark Catesby visited the east coast of North America in 1712–19 and 1722–6. Catesby had read Merian’s work and took issue with a number of her conclusions. He was clearly inspired by her approach to illustration, as this preparatory drawing for plate 100 in the second volume of his Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands shows.
