MARIA SIBYLLA MERIAN (1647-1717)

Mexican Primrose-Willow with Madoryx bubastus moth

1702-03

RCIN 921196

Merian described this moth as being 'grey embellished with black and white flecks', and she has left the illustration uncoloured here. She was able to study the caterpillars easily, as she found them eating the leaves of the Primrose-Willow (Ludwigia octovalvis) which grew in her garden.
