WORKSHOP OF MARIA SIBYLLA MERIAN (1647-1717)

Confederate Rose with Androgeus Swallowtail Butterfly and Julia Butterfly

c.1705?

RCIN 921187

Although this work is closely related to plate 31 in Merian’s Metamorphosis, it is not by Merian herself. The artist has added a Julia Butterfly (Dryas iulia alcionea) to the composition. Such watercolours were made to meet the demand for works in Merian’s style after the publication of the Metamorphosis. This example may have been painted by one of her daughters.
