Studies of Insects, c.1644 – 52

These studies of butterflies and moths were made in Antwerp and published as part of Hollar’s series entitled Diversae Insectorum (Diverse Insects). Hollar was not concerned with life cycles, but rather with the decorative potential of these insects, which he depicted from dead specimens and arranged in elegant symmetry on the page.
