Landscapes

The feel for natural processes evident in Leonardo’s scientific work extended to his landscapes. He was fascinated by atmospheric phenomena, the fall of light on trees, the formation and weathering of mountains, and the evolution of the courses of rivers.

In Leonardo’s landscape drawings, and in the background of his paintings, we see a profound understanding of the interaction of water and rock over vast timescales, and of the earth as a place of infinite flux.
