LEONARDO DA VINCI (VINCI 1452-AMBOISE 1519)

The head of St Philip

c.1495

RCIN 912551

The Last Supper is celebrated for its depiction of violent emotions, and St Philip in the painting stares towards his master in desperation. The youth here displays calm, if rapt, contemplation: the features have been idealised, taking the figure out of the real world and into the divine.
