Leonardo’s most elaborate surviving map centres on the marshy lake that once occupied the Valdichiana in southern Tuscany. Leonardo labelled all the towns and rivers in the conventional direction (unlike his usual mirror-writing), indicating that he drew the map for someone else to see – probably the Florentine government, in connection with a plan to drain the malarial marsh.
