LEONARDO DA VINCI (VINCI 1452-AMBOISE 1519)

A hillside with an outcrop of stratified rock

c.1510-13

RCIN 912394

Stratified rock seems to burst out of a hill, with fragmented boulders in the background. The swirling, overlapping pen lines at lower left serve little descriptive purpose: they are Leonardo’s intuitive attempt to capture the invisible forces that bind the landscape together.
