LEONARDO DA VINCI (VINCI 1452-AMBOISE 1519)

A portrait of a man in profile

c.1480-85

RCIN 912498

A drawing of the profile of a clean-shaven man, his head and shoulders turned to the left. He wears a soft cap over long wavy hair. There is a detail of a thigh in the lower right corner. The drawing may have faded somewhat, and the delicacy of modelling is rather compromised by the emphatic outline, though there is no reason to suppose that the profile was strengthened by a later hand. The identity of the sitter is unknown. Text adapted from 'Leonardo da Vinci: the Divine and the Grotesque'
  • stamp, ER VII, crowned, in oval: Lugt 901
