NAMIKAWA SŌSUKE (1847-1910)

Tray with decoration of a cockerel

c. 1910

Cloisonné enamel on copper body | 1.4 x 25.5 x 30.4 cm (whole object) | RCIN 8586

Artist and entrepreneur Namikawa Sōsuke developed an enamel style resembling ink painting. His technique depended on high-quality enamels which would not bleed into each other during firing. The subtle details on this cockerel were achieved without using separating wires between each colour. In recognition of his skill, Sōsuke was appointed Imperial Household Artist to the Emperor Meiji in 1896.
