Japanese lacquer cabinets decorated with landscapes in gold were the height of luxury when this watercolour was painted in 1818. Two can be seen here in pride of place at Buckingham House (later Buckingham Palace), alongside paintings by the finest artists, such as Sir Anthony van Dyck. The cabinets’ carved stands were custom-made, setting them at a useable height.
