Porcelain styles changed dramatically after Japan’s reopening to the West in the mid-nineteenth century. The generous use of gold and red on these vases represents a new style popular with overseas buyers. They were made by the Watano family, who successfully exported wares worldwide through the ports of Kōbe and Yokohama.
