CHARLES WILD (1781-1835)

Frogmore House: The Green Closet

c. 1819

Watercolour and bodycolour over pencil | 25.1 x 20.0 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 922123

At Frogmore House, Queen Charlotte (1744–1818) created this intimate, eastern-style interior furnished with Chinese ceramics and Indian cane chairs. The watercolour shows the Green Closet, fitted with four Japanese lacquer panels on the left. Combining authentic lacquer with imitation pieces and assorted porcelain was typical of a sumptuous ‘oriental’ furnishing style created by European craftsmen, known as ‘chinoiserie’.
