NICHOLAS HILLIARD (1547-1619)

Queen Elizabeth I (1533-1603)

c.1595-1600

RCIN 421029

Hilliard skilfully recreates the intricate designs of the lace collar by dribbling thick white pigment onto the surface of the vellum. When viewed under a microscope, the paint is raised and casts a shadow in the same way that the lace itself would have done.
