ATTRIBUTED TO FLEMISH SCHOOL, 17TH CENTURY

Prince Frederick Henry (1614-1629)

c.1616

RCIN 403511

The distinctive style of standing band (collar) worn here, fashionable around 1615, together with the monogrammed HF jewel worn at the chest help corroborate the identity of the sitter as Henry Frederick, eldest son of Elizabeth of Bohemia. The prince’s clothing has evidently been designed to co-ordinate with the curtains, chair and chest which surround him. The olive branch motif and toy cannon perhaps indicate the princely virtue of ruling wisely through times of both war and peace.
