BARENT GRAAT (AMSTERDAM 1628- AMSTERDAM 1709)

A Family Group

Signed and dated 1658

Sometimes older generations continued to wear styles that had passed out of fashion amongst the younger members of society. Here the matriarch and patriarch seated in the centre retain styles from their youth, fashionable in the Netherlands during the first three decades of the seventeenth century. By contrast several members of the more experimental younger generation have adopted the new colourful fabrics, hairstyles and garments such as ribbon-trimmed petticoat breeches (worn by the young man at the back) influenced by fashions in France.
