FRANCIS WALWYN (ACTIVE 1628)

Signet ring

RCIN 65409

Signet rings engraved with a seal could be used to authenticate documents and were worn throughout the period. This example is probably that commissioned from the gemcutter Francis Walwyn by Charles I for his new wife Henrietta Maria. The lozenge-shaped diamond is carved with an intaglio crown, royal coat of arms and HMR cypher.
