Preparing the eggs of silkworms

c.1590

RCIN 904765

These three preparatory drawings are for a series of engravings known as ‘Vermis Sericus’ (‘The Silkworm’), a history of the silkworm and silk-spinning by Karel de Malle, published by Philip Galle. In the centre the silkworms are bathed in wine, then put into small bags which are placed inside the women’s bodices next to the skin to keep them warm.
