SIR ANTHONY VAN DYCK (1599-1641)

Charles I (1600-1649)

1635-before June 1636

RCIN 404420

Commissioned by Charles I and sent to the sculptor Bernini in Rome for a portrait bust to be executed in marble, this is one of the most famous depictions of the king. The three lace cloak bands are each slightly different, providing the sculptor with a menu of options when carving the lace design. The fashion for men to wear their hair longer on the left at this date is clearly shown with the figure rotated in space.
