ATTRIBUTED TO DAVID DES GRANGES (C. 1611-C. 1675)

Catherine of Braganza (1638-1705)

1660-61

RCIN 420101

This early depiction shows Catherine of Braganza wearing traditional Portuguese dress – a black gown, wide lace collar and distinctive hairstyle. Upon her arrival in England in 1661, the future queen’s unusual attire prompted much ridicule – Charles II is said to have remarked “they have brought me a bat!”
