SAMUEL COOPER (1609-72)

Catherine of Braganza (1638-1705)

c.1662

RCIN 420644

Very soon after arriving in England, Catherine of Braganza abandoned the style of clothes worn in her native Portugal (shown in the miniature below) in favour of fashions popular at the English court. Her low round neckline, pearl necklace and wired, curled hairstyle are almost identical to those seen in miniatures of her husband Charles II’s most notorious mistress, Barbara Villiers at the same date.
