Mrs Clarke had received a number of love letters from the Duke of York which she showed in Parliament on 13 February and which were widely published. Rowlandson issued a number of them as hieroglyphic letters, a standard means of suggesting secrecy. The letters, with their endearments, were to haunt the Duke for years to come. In 1820 he was still being referred to as ‘A darling Commander’.
