THOMAS ROWLANDSON (1757-1827)

The Champion of the People.

11 Mar 1784

RCIN 810042

Rowlandson or his publisher William Humphrey may have received payment to produce this piece of pro-Fox propaganda. Fox is shown as Hercules defeating the Hydra in order to protect England, Ireland and the East Indies against George III’s attempts to manipulate Parliament. ‘Scotch Politik’ is a reference to William Pitt’s ally Henry Dundas, a prominent Scottish politician. Probably acquired during the reign of Queen Victoria Cat. 7
