THOMAS ROWLANDSON (1757-1827)

Doctor Convex and Lady Concave.

20 Nov 1802

RCIN 810584

The joke here is one of discrepancies: the figures are different in both appearance and social status. This is typical of Rowlandson’s love of humour which lies in the appearance of individual figures rather than in a situation. The maxim quoted at the foot of the print is by Fulke Greville, an Elizabethan courtier. Cat. 58
