THOMAS ROWLANDSON (1757-1827)

The Devonshire, or most approved method of securing votes.

12 Apr 1784

RCIN 810060

The Duchess of Devonshire began to canvass for Fox in April 1784, and her involvement appears to have helped his cause. But she was vilified in the press and satirical prints: it was not considered seemly for a woman to campaign in this manner. Many satirical prints showed the Duchess kissing and hugging voters. Although she denied doing so, accusations about her conduct greatly damaged her reputation. Cat. 9
