This is one of Rowlandson’s most famous prints, based on a watercolour which he exhibited in 1783. The print was published six years later, in response to public interest in France prompted by such events as the storming of the Bastille in July 1789 and the march of thousands of armed women on Versailles in October. Probably purchased by George IV when Prince of Wales, 1790 Cat. 28
