THOMAS ROWLANDSON (1757-1827)

Horrid Visions or Nappy Napp'd at Last.

23 Aug 1808

RCIN 810701

A shock-haired Napoleon is faced by resistance in all directions. Behind him, a Spanish whirlwind knocks King José off his throne, while he is challenged by Russia (a bear), Austria (an eagle) and the Dutch (shown as marsh-dwelling frogs). The print reflects the spirit of optimism as Wellington and the British army began to gain ground in Spain and northern European countries rose up against Napoleon. Cat. 71
