16 Mar 1798RCIN 810491
Fears of a French invasion of Britain heightened in 1797, when Napoleon amassed a sizeable ‘Army of England’. Rowlandson plays on this panic, showing a battle on British soil. The British are vanquishing the French, who are in flight back towards the windmill-powered barges it was commonly believed were being built to carry them across the Channel.
Probably purchased by George IV when Prince of Wales
