THOMAS ROWLANDSON (1757-1827)

A new cock wanted, or work for the plumber.

20 Apr 1810

RCIN 810793

A hand-coloured print of a handsome plumber who has come to repair an old tap, dating from the reign of George II. While her elderly husband looks on grumpily, a young woman flirts with the plumber, who carries a phallic-shaped tap. Rowlandson’s title leaves the viewer in no doubt about the outcome. Inscribed in the plate: Tegg's Caricatures No.1 / Pubd. April 20th 1810 by Thos Tegg No 111 Cheapside / Price One Shilling / Coloured
