WENCESLAUS HOLLAR (1607-77)

Windsor Castle from the south, with two Knights of the Garter

1666

RCIN 700334

Wenceslaus Hollar was born in Prague and came to England in 1636. He specialised in topographical views, and in 1666 was granted the title of ‘Scenographer; or Designer of Prospects’ to King Charles II. In contrast to the Hoefnagel drawing, this view shows the Castle from the south. In the wall to the far left can be seen Henry VIII Gate, remodelled by the King around 1511.
