AFTER WENCESLAUS HOLLAR (1607-77)

The Quire of St George's Chapel, looking west

1663

RCIN 802954

The scholar Elias Ashmole visited Windsor in 1659, and recorded that he took ‘Mr Hollar with me to take views of the castle’. A number of etched views of Windsor by Hollar survive. This shows the Quire of St George’s from the altar. The dramatic pendant vault was completed in Henry’s reign. Beside the right margin can be seen part of the private chamber constructed for the use of Katherine of Aragon, Henry’s first wife.
