Henry Fitzroy (1519–36) was the son of Henry VIII and Elizabeth Blount, a Lady in Waiting to Katherine of Aragon. His illegitimacy meant he had no claim upon the throne, but he was created a Knight of the Garter, and Duke of Richmond and Somerset aged six. This is the only surviving portrait of Fitzroy, and was probably painted at the time of his marriage to a daughter of the Duke of Norfolk. It shows Fitzroy in a strikingly informal pose, wearing an open-necked shirt and an embroidered cap.
