CORNELIS MASSYS (C.1510-62)

Henry VIII

c.1548

RCIN 600814

This print by the Antwerp artist Cornelis Massys shows Henry VIII at the end of his life. The King wears an elegantly embroidered doublet and a sumptuous fur collar. Henry’s clothes were carefully designed to emphasise his authority through his imposing figure and the use of expensive materials. Massys may have made this print while he was in exile in England in the 1540s.
