Richard II (1367-1400)

c.1550-1650

RCIN 404748

One of a set of portraits of monarchs created long after their sitters' deaths, this image of Richard II was painted by a journeyman artist, based on a portrait in Westminster Abbey. Although the King's features are not instantly distinguishable, his status is proclaimed by his gold crown and the jewelled golden clasp and collar which fasten his ermine mantle.
