CHARLES ROBERT LESLIE (1794-1859)

Queen Victoria Receiving the Sacrament at her Coronation, 28 June 1838

1838-9

RCIN 406993

Leslie depicts the solemn moment of the Coronation ceremony when Queen Victoria knelt to take the Sacrament. She is shown in the cloth of gold Imperial Mantle, surrounded by gilded objects on the altar. The rays of golden light piercing the scene from above suggest a divine presence as she takes on the role of monarch.
