GIULIO CLOVIO (1498-1578)

Miscellaneous illuminations made up to form a page

c.1530

RCIN 913035

This complex sheet is made up of a large number of fragments from manuscripts illuminated by the Renaissance miniaturist Giulio Clovio, including a letter ā€˜Pā€™, which surrounds a depiction of a cardinal in his study. Gold leaf and paint have been used both as a ground and to pick out the decorative details, but unlike most other manuscripts of this date no tooling is evident.
