SIR WILLIAM CHAMBERS (1722-96)

Design for the State Coach

1760

RCIN 917942

A new state coach was designed by the architect Chambers (with decorative paintings by G.B. Cipriani) following the accession of George III in 1760. The extravagant gilding made it the most expensive coach ever built. It was first used for the State Opening of Parliament in November 1762 and has been used for the Coronation of every monarch thereafter. The coach is displayed in the Royal Mews, Buckingham Palace.
