This page shows the Mughal Emperor Shah-Jahan seated in the pan of a set of golden scales. The weighing of the Emperor took place each year on his lunar and solar birthdays. He was weighed against silver, gold and other precious items, and an equal weight in each material was then distributed as alms. It was believed that this charitable donation would prevent the Emperor from suffering any corporeal or spiritual catastrophes.
