ROBERT ADAM (1728-92)

Ruins of the palace of the Emperor Diocletian at Spalatro

1764

RCIN 1071086

The decorative tooling in gold on this large volume was designed by the architect Robert Adam, one of the foremost practitioners of the Neoclassical style. It is likely that Adam commissioned new bookbinding tools used to create the magnificent gold tooling featuring a variety of subjects including mermaids, trophies, tridents, rosettes and garlands.
