SIR EDWARD COLEY BURNE-JONES (1833-98)

Head of a girl

dated June 1897

RCIN 914217

As a later member of the Pre-Raphaelite movement and an associate of William Morris, Burne-Jones was interested in reviving traditional artistic techniques, and he made drawings using precious metals throughout his career. Gold was frequently used in manuscript illumination, and the foliage and birds to the right here can be seen as an interpretation of the decorated borders of medieval manuscripts.
