ALAN STANTON (B. 1944)

Belgrade Theatre

2010

RCIN 212784

An inkjet print of a composition of flat intersecting rectangles. A study of the façade of the extension to the Belgrade Theatre, Coventry, designed by the architects Stanton Williams. Signed and dated, lower right. Belgrade Theatre in Coventry, the country's first purpose-built civic theatre, opened in 1958. In 2002 Stanton Williams were commissioned to design a second auditorium for the theatre, as well as expanding the existing foyers and improving the backstage facilities. The extension, completed in 2007, complements the Grade II-listed Modernism of the original building and recaptures the pioneering spirt of the theatre's early days.
