GEORGE WASHINGTON WILSON (1823-93)

The Brig o' Balgownie on the Don near Aberdeen

1856

RCIN 2320163

Wilson exhibited this photograph during the Manchester Art Treasures exhibition in 1857. The exhibition was an important showcase for the nation’s artists and was opened by the Prince Consort on 5 May 1857. Wilson exhibited alongside important national photographers; the acceptance of his work was an acknowledgment of his growing reputation. The image is rich in details and leads the viewer’s eye from the two figures in the foreground to the hills in the background, using the diagonal plane of the bridge on the left. The bridge also helps to frame the image. A reviewer in the Glasgow Herald of 22 December 1856 described this photograph as a ‘perfect marvel in respect of delicacy and minuteness of delineation’.
