GEORGE WASHINGTON WILSON (1823-93)

Friedrich Wilhelm III of Prussia, later Emperor of Germany (1831-88)

29 Sep 1855

RCIN 2906606

This portrait of Prince Frederick of Prussia (1831–88) was taken on the same day that he proposed to Princess Victoria during his stay at Balmoral Castle. The portrait shows the prince confident and at ease, with his left hand resting on a walking cane and a hat, bearing a sprig of heather in the brim, under his left arm. Following Prince Frederick’s proposal to Princess Victoria, the queen expressed her affection for her future son-in-law, writing in her journal ‘I embraced him tenderly, as I quite feel to love him as my only child’.
