GEORGE WASHINGTON WILSON (1823-93)

Balmoral Castle from the North West

1859

RCIN 2320005

This view was originally intended to be a stereoscopic image. When viewed through a stereoscope, the two images would have combined to give a three-dimensional effect. The photograph includes layers of information in the foreground, middle and background, which serve to enhance its three-dimensional effect. A man with his back to the viewer leans against a birch tree with Balmoral Castle in the distance. A wrought iron bench placed to the left of the foreground adds a further layer of depth and helps to break up the monotony of the path that bisects the image.
