Queen Victoria with two of her children and members of her household

The first portrait shows the queen with two of her children. Her youngest daughter, Beatrice, holds the ear of her terrier, Wat, alongside Prince Arthur, the Duke of Connaught and Strathearn (1850–1942).

The second photograph, taken two years later, shows some of the closest members of Queen Victoria’s household. Taken from a low angle, with some of the subjects seated on the floor, the group is arranged as if engaged in conversation. From left to right, the group includes: Richard Assheton Cross (1823–1914) who served as Home Secretary; Sir Henry Ponsonby (1825–95), the Queen’s Private Secretary; Harriet Lepel Phipps (1841–1922), Maid of Honour and confidante to the Queen; Mary Elizabeth Ponsonby (née Bulteel) (1832–1916), wife of Sir Henry Ponsonby; Jane Loftus, Marchioness of Ely (1821–90), the queen’s favourite Lady-in-Waiting; Alexander Grantham Yorke (1847–1911), Groom-in-Waiting; and General Alexander Nelson Hood (1814–1904), Viscount Bridport, Lord-in-Waiting.
