LEONE LEONI (1509-90)

Emperor Charles V (1500-1558)

1555c. 1555

RCIN 35325

George IV bought this powerful image of chivalry and kingship, together with the bust of Philip II of Spain, from the wealthy collector George Watson-Taylor. He undoubtedly admired Leoni’s carefully accurate rendition of sixteenth-century armour as much as the portraits themselves.

Purchased in 1825
