Edward Ross is photographed with his father Horatio Ross (1801-86), one of the most accomplished marksmen of the nineteenth century. Horatio had previously met Fenton in early 1860 when together they undertook training in the Volunteers. Horatio was also a pioneering photographer. He exhibited his work widely, particularly scenes of deer-stalking and hunting.
