Between 12 and 18 October 1986 The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh paid a state visit to China, the first ever by a reigning British sovereign. During the visit The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh saw the Great Wall of China and on this occasion The Queen wore this striking purple ensemble designed by Hardy Amies. The outfit bears the hallmarks of Amies’ elegant tailoring while reflecting the accentuated shoulder line of 1980s style.
