Master: Battle Dress of the Auxillary Territorial Service (ATS) 1939-45
In February 1945, in response to Princess Elizabeth’s wish to join one of the Women’s Services, King George VI granted her a commission with the honorary rank of Second Subaltern in the ATS. The Princess became the first female member of the Royal Family to join the Armed Services as a full-time active member. This uniform was worn by Princess Elizabeth during her training which included car-maintenance. The uniform is standard battle dress and consists of a wool serge jacket and trousers worn with a shirt and tie and a service cap with the badge of the regiment.
